Fat Injection

Fat Fillers

For people who have sunken cheekbones, deep-set wrinkles, or
lips that need to be plumped up, fat injections may be the answer.

This temporary solution has proved effective for a range of
cosmetic problems, and any worries about injecting a foreign
substance in your body can be alleviated once you realize that
the fat injected in one part of your body was extracted from another area.

Which Simple Procedure will make you Look Your Best?

Are Fat Injections Right For You?

It doesn’t matter how old you are, you can be a suitable candidate for a fat filler injection. The ideal candidates are those who are fully informed about the procedure and are willing and able to follow the doctor’s before-and-after treatment instructions. It may be necessary to have several injections to get the look desired, and patients must be willing to go through the process again and again. Also, to have fat injections, you have to have enough fat in other parts of your body to be used for extraction.

The Procedure for Fat Injections

The procedure is done under a local anesthesia in the doctor's office. Depending on the extent of treatment, the procedure can take from 30 to 90 minutes, and soon after that the patient can return home.

The first part of the procedure involves applying antiseptic to two areas: the location of the fat to be removed, and the target areas that will receive the injections. Then, using a syringe or a cannula (a thin, hollow tube) that is attached to a vacuum device, fat cells are extracted from the buttocks, stomach, or thighs.

Once the fat cells are suctioned out, they are purified by the doctor. The fat is then injected beneath the skin into the target area, and a bandage is applied.

In only a week, the patient will be able to see results. Fat fillers never result in 100 percent improvement of wrinkles, scars, hollow cheeks, or thinned lips; nor are the results permanent. Results can last as little as a few weeks or as long as one year.

The Recovery Period for Fat Fillers

Patients may experience swelling and bruising following the procedure. For the first 48 hours after the procedure, the treated area may appear reddish and scabs may form. Most patients are able to resume normal activities almost immediately.

Complications and Risks of Fat Injections

As with any medical procedure, risks are a possibility. That said, complications from fat injections are rare. The most typical problems that emerge are infections, abscesses, and scarring.

Alternative Treatments

If you don’t like the idea of fat injections, you have other treatment options that are also minimally invasive, such as Botox and Restylane. People whose anti-aging goals are more comprehensive may need surgical procedures such as a facelift, eyelid surgery, or a forehead lift.

Finding a Qualified Doctor

To be sure you’re getting the best results from the most highly trained and experienced doctor, you should do a careful search. Consider these tips when searching for the physician who is right for you:

  • Review the doctor's credentials and education, and the number of times that he/she has performed the procedure.
  • Ask about risks and possible side effects. Ask your doctor to estimate the number of treatments you will need to reach your goals.
  • Ask to see before-and-after photos of patients with similar conditions who received fat injections and alternative procedures.
  • Make sure you have a list of pre-op and post-op instructions.

Cost of Fat Injections

The cost for fat injections can range from a minimum of $350 to more than $5,000, if the entire face is treated.

Some insurance companies will cover the procedure, if it is deemed medically necessary, such as treatment of injury-related scars. Procedures that are done solely for cosmetic reasons are generally not covered by insurance.

If you need help paying for your fat injections, talk to your doctor to see if you can set up a monthly payment plan.
